When Will They Learn?

I am wondering why the San Diego Padres are still part of the National League. There must be some sort of contract that guarantees us life membership or something. Honestly, we should have been shipped over to the AL by now, which by the way, would even out that obnoxious 16 to 14 team ratio we've got going on.

You may be thinking, "Blake, come on. Sure, the Padres have had some rough seasons, but they don't deserve deportation just for being sub-par. Both leagues have bad teams and without them we wouldn't appreciate the good ones as much." If you are thinking that, I applaud you for your deductive reasoning. However, the simple fact that the Padres are horrendous in the regular season is NOT what brought the thought of deportation to my mind.

This past Tuesday was the 2009 MLB All-Star Game. Sigh...

I don't usually care about All-Star games. The Pro Bowl and NBA All-star game are more of a joke than the San Francisco 49ers taking Alex "You are making a huge mistake because I suck at football" Smith with the 1st overall pick. However, The MLB All-star game matters. It SHOULDN'T matter, but it matters. It is ridiculous that home field advantage in the World Series be decided by anything besides record. And while I'm on the subject of why the all-star game is a load of horse crap, who decided it was a good idea to pick all-stars based on only HALF of the season?? That would be like not playing the second half of an AFC playoff game in 1993 because the Houston Oilers are beating you 35-3. But, I digress. I'm not Bud Selig, my opinion doesn't matter.

Anyways, back to my point. The Padres, despite minimal all-stars in recent years, have single-handedly sabotaged 3 of the last 4 all-star games. 2006: Padres pitcher Trevor Hoffman enters the game in the 9th with a 1-run lead. He promptly allows a single, a double, and a heart-wrenching triple to Michael Young. NL loses 3-2. 2007: Padres pitcher Chris Young enters the game in the 5th and allows 2 runs. He receives the loss. NL loses 5-4. Tuesday: Padres pitcher Heath Bell enters a 3-3 tie in the 8th inning. He allows a 1-out triple to Curtis Granderson, who scores the winning run 2 batters later. NL loses 4-3.

When will the National League learn?
