NFL Week 12
How about those Thanksgiving day games huh? Could we have picked 3 worse games this week? I'm really glad I got to sit back and watch 3 games that were so close and not decided within the first 30 minutes. It's becoming ridiculous. I don't want to see Detroit on Thanksgiving anymore. And I don't want to see Dallas at home, beating up on a bottom-dweller. Either give me a better team to replace Detroit, or give me a better team to rival Dallas. Something needs to change. I am utterly disappointed.
Anyways, I correctly picked 2 of the 3 games on Thanksgiving. I picked Green Bay (-11) due to the fact that I thought Stafford and Johnson weren't going to play. They did, but they were both mediocre, so there you go. I also picked Dallas (-13.5) because Oakland, despite showing up for 1 or 2 home games a year, NEVER plays well on the road. Period. Unfortunately, I picked the Giants (-6.5) because I hate Josh Poopy Face McDaniels (who shall be henceforth known simply by his middle names) and I really didn't know if the Broncos were going to win another game this season. To my dismay, Poopy Face had his defense ready to play and they won easily. What are you gonna do?
Here are the remaining 13 games on the week 12 docket:
Indy (-3.5) over HOUSTON
Does it worry me that the Texans were a Kris Brown field goal away from taking the Colts into overtime? Not at all. You know why? Because Kris Brown is arguably the worst clutch kicker ever. Has he ever made a game winning/tying field goal in the 4th quarter? I know he's 0/2 this season. And just like Brown, I don't trust the Texans, at all. I think they are done.
CLEVELAND (+13.5) over Cincy
The Browns scored 37 points last week, and even though they played Detroit, we know they at least have the physical ability to score. Cincinnati has only won 1 game by more than 10 points, and the last time they played the Browns (in Cincinnati, by the way), they needed 74 minutes and 53 seconds to beat them by just 3 points. The line is just too high.
MINNESOTA (-11) over Chicago
I will continue to pick the Vikings until they provide me with a reason not to.
Washington (+9) over PHILLY
Ballsy Pick of the Week. I think the Redskins are underrated, and I think the Eagles are overrated. It's simple mathematics. I would not be surprised to see the Redskins win this game outright. I just don't think the Eagles are as good as we want to believe.
Miami (-3) over BUFFALO
I feel like the weather in Buffalo is not going to affect the Dolphins like it does other warm-weather teams. The Dolphins don't need to pass the ball. They are probably the team that relies on it the least in the NFL. I also feel like there are very few teams that the Bills could beat right now... Maybe I could name 3, but that's a HUGE maybe.
TENNESSEE (-2.5) over Arizona
I'm liking what I'm seeing from Tennessee. I am completely terrified of Chris Johnson. I would rather see anyone else against my team. ANYONE. I would even rather see Adrian Peterson right now, the guy who put up 296 rushing yards against us. That's how much I fear Chris Johnson. Also, Kurt Warner has a concussion, which is very very bad for Arizona.
ST. LOUIS (+4) over Seattle
I like the Rams, ok? I have a man crush on Steven Jackson. He is going to single-handedly win this game. Just watch.
Tampa Bay (+12) over ATLANTA
I don't remember if I have officially jumped off the Falcons bandwagon... But if I haven't, I am doing so now.
Carolina (+3) over NYJ
I refuse to recognize this as a real NFL game. I won't do it. You can't make me.
Jacksonville (+3) over SF
The flipping Jacksonville Jaguars are going to be 7-4 after this week. I still don't understand how they got to this point. It doesn't add up. Where did they find the time to accumulate 6 wins in between all that mediocrity?
SAN DIEGO (-13.5) over Kansas City
The Chargers have now won 5 straight games and it would be considered base treachery if I decided to turn on them now. Do I really think they will cover in this game? I'm not sure. But I'm not going to pick against them.
Pittsburgh @ BALTIMORE does not yet have a line, which is weird because the game is happening TOMORROW. And I refuse to pick in any capacity until one has been established. I'll probably post it before game time tomorrow (5:30).
NEW ORLEANS (-2) over New England
They should have scheduled this game for the NFL Network Thanksgiving game. Holy hell, can you imagine how many more people would have watched it than the Broncos-Giants? Can you imagine how many people would have gone somewhere that has NFL Network to watch it? Can you imagine how many people would have PURCHASED something that carries NFL Network? This would have been great for them. I really want to see the NFL Network do well, because I love football (and Rich Eisen), but they have to start pulling these big name games. And don't worry, this game is going to be awesome. I give the edge to the Saints because they are at home, and if you have ever watched a Saints game, you know how much that team means to its fans. It's ridiculous. It's like Mardi Gras every week.

Week 11 Mistakes
8-8.
I am starting to lose my picking mojo. I have been waiting for a breakout week, maybe 12-4 or 11-5, but it never comes. I always end up somewhere around .500. I think my problem is that I get too wrapped up in the favorites, and I don't consider the line so much. It is hard to blow teams out in the NFL and most of the time, games come down to just a few possessions one way or the other. So basically, I need to stop picking these huge lines when I know full-well that a team could be up 17 in the 4th quarter and just turn off the burners. They could end up winning by 3. They might pull their starters, or stop throwing the ball. That's how the NFL works.
Anyways, I did get half the games right:
Indianapolis (-1) over BALTIMORE 17-15
San Francisco (+6.5) over GREEN BAY 24-30
MINNESOTA (-11) over Seattle 35-9
Washington (+11) over DALLAS 6-7 (Ballsy Pick of the Week SUCCESSFUL)
New Orleans (-11.5) over TAMPA BAY 38-7
NEW ENGLAND (-10) over New York Jets 31-14
San Diego (-3) over DENVER 32-3
Philadelphia (-3) over CHICAGO 24-20
On the other hand, I got half the games wrong too:
CAROLINA (-3) over Miami
Score: MIA 24, CAR 17
I already kind of explained this one. I knew the Panthers were awful. I should have stuck with my gut feeling.
DETROIT (-3.5) over Cleveland
Score: DET 38, CLE 37
I don't even care that I missed this one, what a game it was. Two of the worst teams in the NFL, both 1-8, playing theirs hearts out in Detroit. The outcome of this game was practically meaningless. No one was watching. No one really cared. But boy did Matthew Stafford show us something. All of a sudden, his future looks much, much brighter.
JACKSONVILLE (-8.5) over Buffalo
Score: JAC 18, BUF 15
Just a lousy game. But Jacksonville continues to win. Don't look now but they are 6-4 and deeply entrenched in the playoff race. They could be the Miami Dolphins of 2009.
Pittsburgh (-10) over KANSAS CITY
Score: KC 27, PIT 24
.... Oops? You have to cut Pittsburgh a little slack because both Roethlisberger and Batch were injured in the game, but they shouldn't even have been in that situation late in the game.
NEW YORK GIANTS (-6.5) over Atlanta
Score: NYG 34, ATL 31
I still don't know what to think about these teams. The Giants won so I do have to give them the slight advantage here. But I still don't know if either of these teams makes the playoffs at this point. Right now they are both looking in from the outside (sitting at the 7th and 8th spots in the NFC) and does Eli have enough to make a late run? Will Michael Turner be healthy enough? We will have to wait and see.
Cincinnati (-9) over OAKLAND
Score: OAK 20, CIN 17
I feel like I owe Edward an apology for calling him out over this pick... However, he's not going to get one. This was a freak game. The Bengals were missing Cedric Benson, and they should have won the game regardless. They played down to Oakland's level, not the other way around. I don't know if they were looking ahead, past the Raiders, or if they were just flying too high after sweeping both Pittsburgh and Baltimore, but come on! These are the games that Superbowl contenders win. Period.
Arizona (-9) over ST. LOUIS
Score: ARZ 21, STL 13
If Warner hadn't gone down, the Cardinals wold have covered. That's all there is to it.
HOUSTON (-4.5) over Tennessee
Score: TEN 20, HOU 17
I think the Texans are done. They show no heart out there on the field. They find ways to lose every close game they play. They have so much talent on the team, and yet it never comes together in the clutch. I don't see them in the playoffs this year. As for the Titans, they are still written off in my mind. I know they have righted the ship and are only a few games out of contention, but they haven't really beaten anyone, and I think they just dug too big of a hole to climb out of.Anyways, I did get half the games right:

NFL Week 11 (Part 2)
I knew the Panthers sucked. I knew it! Why did I let them suck me in? If you can't beat a Ronnie Brown-less Dolphins team, you have some serious defensive issues.
DETROIT (-3.5) over Cleveland
It is much easier for me to see Calvin Johnson having a big game here than Muhammad Massaquoi. Enough said.JACKSONVILLE (-8.5) over Buffalo
The Jaguars have very quietly started off 5-4 this year. If the season ended today, they would have the 7th best record in the AFC, missing the playoffs by a single game. We have to give them some respect, and their remaining schedule is not that challenging. They do have to play Indy and New England in weeks 15 and 16, but the other 5 games are home for Houston, Miami, and Buffalo and @ San Fran, @ Cleveland. Those are all winable games. They could conceivably be 10-6 come January, and with the way the Broncos and Ravens are going, I'm not so sure 10-6 isn't enough for a wild card.Pittsburgh (-10) over KANSAS CITY
The Steelers are going to erupt in this game. Mark my words. They will get back to the groung attack that has served them well for decades with Mendenhall, and the defense will be all over Cassel from the get-go. I don't think this game is going to be close. It might be over at half time.Indianapolis (-1) over BALTIMORE
No no no no no! What has this world come to? Is anyone aware of Indianapolis' record this season? Anyone? It's 9-0. They haven't lost yet. At all. Not one time. And we are saying they haven't done enough to warrant a 3 point spread every week? How can we say that after the events of last Sunday night? HOW? I don't understand. I really don't.NEW YORK GIANTS (-6.5) over Atlanta
I don't know what to think of these teams. Both of them had such high expectations early in the season. Both have stalled terribly of late. And both have had injury problems that remain unresolved. I'm thinking the Giants are more likely to get going than the Falcons. I don't know why...San Francisco (+6.5) over GREEN BAY
Do we believe in the Packers now? After one game? Not enough for me. I don't see why any of their problems are fixed. Is the offensive line all good now? Is the running game set now? I don't think so. I think 6.5 is far too high.MINNESOTA (-11) over Seattle
I am tired of picking against Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson. It's that simple. Also, I don't believe in Seattle as a contender.Washington (+11) over DALLAS
Is this the same Dallas team that lost by double digits to Green Bay last week? Then why are they laying 11 points? Washington is not that bad. They beat a 6-2 team last week (albeit with Chris Simms at the helm) and I can't believe I'm saying this, but.... Jason Campbell is underrated. Ballsy Pick of the Week: WAS 27, DAL 24.New Orleans (-11.5) over TAMPA BAY
The Saints have not covered the last 3 weeks. And they barely covered against Miami (a game in which they trailed by 600 points in the 2nd quarter) That worries me. They have had a real problem stopping the run. However, in the past 4 games, they have faced the likes of Ronnie Brown/Ricky Williams, Michael Turner, DeAngelo Williams/Jonathan Stewart, and Steven Jackson. If that isn't being run through the gauntlet, I don't know what is. This week it's Cadillac Williams/Derrick Ward. Can you say blowout?Arizona (-9) over ST. LOUIS
Once again, this line means nothing to me. And once again, I feel like this is one of the games that Arizona needs to show up for. The NFC West should be theirs by now, and if they put away these easy divisional games, they will have it sooner rather than later.NEW ENGLAND (-10) over New York Jets
OOOOOH, I would not want to be the Jets in this game. Not one bit. I wouldn't want to be a Jets player, I wouldn't want to be a Jets coach. I wouldn't want to be a Jets fan, a Jets employee, or a member of the Jets from West Side Story. I can't see how this results in anything but a Patriots blowout. Look at the circumstances. The Patriots are coming off what has to be one of the worst losses in history, based on who it was against, where it was played, how it transpired, and the circumstances surrounding it. The Jets look awful after that great start they had. They have fallen to 4-5. They can't beat anyone who isn't Oakland, and I have no reason to think they are still in the playoff hunt. Also, the Jets talked an awful lot of smack after they beat the Pats back in September, which means we will probably see Brady throwing bombs to moss, late in 4th quarter, up by 38. Do not be surprised.Cincinnati (-9.5) over OAKLAND
Edward ridiculed me for taking Cleveland (+11) against Baltimore. Granted I lost, but I stand behind that pick and refuse to accept that it was that bad. Well the tables have turned this week. Edward has chosen the Oakland Raiders, yes THOSE Oakland Raiders, to cover in this game. I think this pick is approximately 1 kajillion times worse. The Bengals are going to win the AFC North. It's time for us to accept that. With tiebreakers, they have a 2 game lead over Pittsburgh, and a 3 game lead over Baltimore. And do you want to hear their schedule from here on out? @ Oakland, Vs. Cleveland, Vs. Detroit, @ Minnesota, @ San Diego, Vs. Kansas City, @ NY Jets. At the LEAST, we are looking at 12-4. Maybe even 13-3. This team is very, very good. Oakland is awful. You do the math.San Diego (-3) over DENVER
Doesn't this situation remind you a lot of week 17 of last year? I know, right? It's sort of uncanny, isn't it?Philadelphia (-3) over CHICAGO
JAY CUTLER SUCKS!!!!HOUSTON (-4.5) over Tennessee
Much better game than it would have been 4 weeks ago. Of course, I'm worried about Chris Johnson, but I feel like Houston can counter him with Schaub/Slaton/Moats/Johnson. And if the defense shows up just a bit, they should be able to rattle Vince Young into making some mistakes. Good game though.Fantasy Time:

NFL Week 11 (Part 1)
Just wanted to make sure I got my Thurday night pick out there before the game starts.
CAROLINA (-3.5) over Miami
Can't you hear the sound of 30,000 people simultaneously jumping off the Dolphins bandwagon? The Dolphins no longer have any talented players left on the available roster. Ricky Williams has been a nice sidekick to Ronnie Brown but I can't see him effectively running the wildcat. The only thing that scares me is the possibility of Pat White in the wildcat, which would be a rushing downgrade from Brown, but a legitimate passing upgrade as well. As for the Panthers, it appears that they are on the upswing right now. No one can stop their running attack and Jake Delhomme has scaled back the whole turnover thing. Look for a big night from Jonathan Stewart tonight with Williams a little banged up.

Week 10 Mistakes
8-6-1
Another week above .500, I'll take it. I had work on Sunday so I did not watch any of the games live, but I taped the Chargers-Eagles game and the Colts-Pats game, and they did not disappoint. The Chargers got out to a big lead and held off a late Eagles comeback to win 31-23 and climb up into a first place tie with Denver, who had lost to Washington earlier. So that made me happy. At this point, it was about 11:00 and I was debating if I wanted to watch the Sunday night game or not. I decided I would since I had no reason to get up early the next day. Once I got to the 4th quarter and the Patriots went up 31-14, I was ready to pack it in. It was almost 1:00 am and I was having difficulty keeping my eyes open. Thankfully, I continued to fight sleep and watch the apparent blowout, probably because I knew the Colts would make a run. By the time 4th and 2 on the 28 came around, I was wide awake, screaming at the TV and Bill Belichick. You knew the Colts were going to score once they got the ball on the 29 yard line. Everyone knew. If you thought the Patriots were going to hold, then you are either a New England native or an insane person.
Now, some people have defended Belichick's decision. I am not one of them. I know it was a bad decision becuase even if it had worked out, I still would have thought it was a bad move. I can understand his thinking to a degree... but I wouldn't even have gone for it in madden, let alone in a real life game. And if I HAD gone for it, I wouldn't have thrown a 2-yard out to my backup RB. Stupid play-call.
However, I am not going to blame the entire loss on that one play. The Patriots were up 31-14 in the 4th quarter, and they took their foot off the accelerator. They let the Colts drive right down and score (31-21). They then took just 4 minutes off the clock and were forced to punt. They even got a pick off of Manning, an apparent dagger at the time) that set them up at the Colts' 30. They used just 3 minutes and settled for a field goal (34-21). So we have about 4 minutes left (ages and ages for Peyton Manning). The Colts go down and score in under 2 minutes (34-28). Now the Pats are getting a little nervous, who wouldn't be? They get the ball back with 2:23 left and promptly lay a big fat egg right there on the field. 4 plays, 9 yards, 23 seconds off the clock, and a turnover on downs. And the rest is history.
I don't know who was wearing those white uniforms in the 4th quarter, but it was not the New England Patriots.
But I digress, Belichick has taken enough beating.
Here are the games I picked correctly:
SAN FRANCISCO (-3.5) over Chicago
Jacksonville (+7) over NEW YORK JETS 24-22
Cincinnati (+7) over Pittsburgh 18-12
TENNESSEE (-6) over Buffalo 41-17
Tampa Bay (+10) over MIAMI 23-25
ARIZONA (-8.5) over Seattle 31-20
SAN DIEGO (-2.5) over Philadelphia 31-23
New England (+3) over INDIANAPOLIS 34-35
And this game was a push:
Detroit (+17) over MINNESOTA 10-27
Here is where I didn't do so hot:
Denver (-3.5) over WASHINGTON
Score: WAS 27, DEN 17
What have we learned here? The Broncos aren't quite as good as we thought, and Chris Simms isn't good at all. Moving on.
New Orleans (-13.5) over St. Louis
Score: NO 28, STL 23
I knew this was going to happen! I knew Jackson was going to run wild! Dang it...
Atlanta (-1.5) over CAROLINA
Score: CAR 28, ATL 19
So the Panthers are good now? Or what? It would be nice if teams that start out like crap, keep playing like crap. It would make my life much easier.
OAKLAND (-1.5) over Kansas City
Score: KC 16, OAK 10
Why am I not surprised?
Dallas (-3) over GREEN BAY
Score: GB 17, DAL 7
Look at what happens? I basically write off the Packers on Saturday, and then this?? This was one of the games I was more sure this week, nay, this season. On the other hand.... I'm glad my Superbowl pick isn't totally embarrassing me.
CLEVELAND (+11) over Baltimore (Ballsy Pick of the Week FAILED)
Score: BAL 16, CLE 0
I refuse to admit that this was a bad pick. I stand behind it 100% The Browns defense was fantastic in this game. They gave up 7 legitimate points in the game. 6 were scored on a Brady Quinn INT returned for a TD (extra point was blocked by Sean Rogers... which surprises no one). And they gave up a field goal only because Quinn threw another pick and subsequently drew a 15-yard illegal block penalty, giving the Ravens the ball at the 24. If the Browns could have just mustered one measly TD, I would have been golden. But no! I blame Eric Mangini. I blame him for everything that goes wrong.
Quick Note: I didn't post my Week 1 picks, but I did make them. I went 8-8... you are just going to have to believe me.
Overall Record: 76-66-2
Ballsy Pick of the Week Record: 7-2
No fantasy update for you this week. Vincent Jackson and Cedric Benson had a combined 4 points, you can probable figure out how my fantasy weekend was...

NFL Week 10
I completely forgot that I needed to do this post before the Thursday night game, but I did in fact choose San Francisco (-3.5) to cover against Chicago. I have witnesses, 2 of them actually. My reasoning? The Bears are awful. There you go. Quick Note: Do you think the NFL Network is pissed that their first Thursday game of the season was arguable the worst football game EVER? I would think so.
As for the rest of the games, here's how I'm feeling:
Jacksonville (+7) over NEW YORK JETS
Is it time to start worrying about the Sanchise? Is the hostile, unforgiving New York crowd getting to him? Did we all jump on the "Rex Ryan, defensive genius" bandwagon just a teensy bit too soon? Yes. Yes. And a resounding, unequivocal yes. Something is not right with this Jets team. And I am much more frightened of Maurice Jones-Drew than the Jets defense at this point
Denver (-3.5) over WASHINGTON
All these Chargers fans want me to believe that Denver is going to lose this game. It's not going to happen, ok? It's the Redskins, arguably the most dysfunctional team in the NFL (definitely in the NFC, Oakland or Cleveland might edge them out for the overall title). They just aren't good enough to beat Denver. Clinton Portis is out and Ladell Betts is currently listed as questionable with an ankle injury. So who is going to run the ball for Washington? Rock Cartwright? (Incidentally, the coolest name ever)
Cincinnati (+7) over PITTSBURGH
I can no longer deny the talent of the Bengals. That is a top 10 football team. Who saw that coming before the season??? They are playing well on both sides of the ball, they are beating good teams (3 combined wins over Baltimore and Pittsburgh already this season), and they always seem to keep games close. They don't let games get away from them. Also, Cedric Benson has to be the comeback player of the year right now, right? Can we get them on a night game sometime?
TENNESSEE (-6.5) over Buffalo
I don't know what to do here... All of a sudden the Titans look like the 13-3 team of 2008. Chris Johnson is just a destroyer of worlds. I think he may have had a rush of under 50 yards last week, but I could be wrong. On the other hand, the only thing the Bills can claim is that they are not yet mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but believe me that train is coming and it is coming fast. I guess I'll take Tennessee... I don't know.
Detroit (+17) over MINNESOTA
17 points is too high.
New Orleans (-13.5) over ST. LOUIS
13.5 points is too low.
Atlanta (-1.5) over CAROLINA
Originally, I scoffed at this line. The lowly Panthers? Just 1.5 points? Ridiculous! But once I actually thought about it, this line really isn't that crazy. The Panthers have played pretty well the last 2 weeks (mainly because they realized that they have a deadly combo of RBs and Jake Delhomme sucks) and were a 2nd half defensive meltdown away from dethroning the undefeated Saints. Also, the Falcons have not been spectacular at run defense. However, I'm still gonna stick with Atlanta. I just think they are better.
Tampa Bay (+10) over MIAMI
What the hell has Miami done to deserve a 10 point line? Seriously, give me one thing. It doesn't matter that everyone thinks they are the best 3-5 team in the history of the NFL, at a certain point you have to just accept that they are, in fact, 3-5. They have beaten Buffalo (whoop-de-freakin-doo) and the Jets twice (by 4 points in week 5 and 5 points in week 8). Don't expect a blowout, kiddies.
OAKLAND (-1.5) over Kansas City
Does anyone care? Anyone out there care about this one at all? Good let's move on.
ARIZONA (-8.5) over Seattle
The line in this game means absolutely nothing. I'm serious, it could be -31 and it wouldn't make a difference. The only thing that matters is which Cardinals team shows up for the game. If you get the 2008 playoff run Cardinals, then there's no contest. It's over. They could win by 50. But, if you get the "crap in the bed" Cardinals (see week 1, 3, and 8 of this season) then they could be down 24-6 at halftime. I am inclined to believe that we will see the former this weekend. If they aren't gonna get up for a division game against the only other possible threat in said division, what are they gonna get up for?
SAN DIEGO (-2.5) over Philadelphia
Have I mentioned that the Eagles lost to the Raiders in week 6? I'm not making this up. I swear.
Dallas (-3) over GREEN BAY
I don't know how much longer we can defend the Packers. "The O-line just needs to get healthy," "No one was getting open for Aaron Rodgers," "Ryan Grant just needs to get going." I'm afraid they just aren't any good. Combine that with the Cowboys' 4-game win streak, and this one seems pretty simple to me.
New England (+3) over INDIANAPOLIS
Game of the year. I don't care what happens later in the season. I don't care if the Patriots go into the Superdome with the chance to end the Saints run at perfection. If you aren't excited by the mere thought of this match up, then you don't have a pulse. Go see your doctor, it could be serious. Anyways, I am all over the Patriots in this game. I think the Pats are just now hitting their stride, while the Colts seem to be slipping just a bit. They haven't lost but they have been close to doing so against the 49ers and Texans the last 2 weeks. I think it comes to a screeching halt this week, that 483 game regular season win streak the Colts have, or whatever it is.
CLEVELAND (+11) over Baltimore
This is easily the ballsiest pick. Of the week? No. Of the year? Getting warmer. EVER? YES! My buddy Edward told me that this was the worst pick he has ever heard. It is unfortunate that he is so sorely mistaken. Look at the facts. The Ravens are 4-4. FACT. You can't deny that they have been a huge disappointment. They have been swept by the Bengals. FACT. They couldn't even beat them at home. That just isn't going to cut it for the Ravens. Their defense has more holes in it than Andy Reid's diet plans (why do I keep picking on the poor guy?... I just can't help it). And while I have zero expectation of a Cleveland victory, they are at home and this is basically Brady Quinn's last chance to prove himself. This game, a Monday night game, with the entire country watching, is his "contract season," if you will. It is now or never for Quinn, that's got to count for something.

Week 9 Mistakes
7-6
Not bad, not bad. Any time I'm over .500, I really shouldn't complain. This season has proven to be as random and difficult to pick as any season in recent history. Some years (e.g. 2007), there was no reason not to pick the Patriots, Colts, and Steelers EVERY week. Now, I have to wonder if they are going to be able to beat the Dolphins or Texans or Broncos by enough points. It's ridiculous. Completely ridiculous.
Here are the games I got right:
- Kansas City (+6.5) over JACKSONVILLE 21-24 (I forgot to make a Ballsy Pick but this definitely would have been it... I swear...... It's my blog, I can do what I want!)
- ATLANTA (-10) over Washington 31-17
- Arizona (+3) over CHICAGO 41-21
- SEATTLE (-10) over Detroit 32-20
- San Diego (+5) over NEW YORK GIANTS 21-20
- Dallas (+3) over PHILADELPHIA 20-16
- Pittsburgh (-3) over DENVER 28-10 (Do you hear those footsteps, Broncos? DO YA???)
And here are the games that let me down... like always...
Baltimore (-3) over CINCINNATI
Score: CIN 17, BAL 7
Did I say the Ravens would be good this year? I don't think I said that. You must be confusing me with someone else. But seriously, who saw this 6-2 start for the Bengals coming? Especially that defense! My goodness, that is a top-notch defense. And Cedric Benson! That is a top-notch running back. Two 100 yard-games against the Ravens defense. That hasn't happened since 348 A.D. I don't know if they can beat out the Steelers for the division, but I can definitely see them as the 5 seed.
INDIANAPOLIS (-9) over Houston
Score: IND 20, HOU 17
Oh Kris Brown, you pitiful man. This had to be the most important game in Texans franchise history, and you RUINED it. You have to make that kick. There is no other option. That is the kind of kick that separates the Vinatieri's from the Vanderjact's.
Green Bay (-9.5) over TAMPA BAY
Score: TB 38, GB 28
I have realized that there is always one game each week (just 1, not more) in which I make such a terrible pick, such an awful attempt at competency, that all I can say about it is, "whoops." This is that game...
NEW ENGLAND (-10.5) over Miami
NE 27, MIA 17
Why am I not seeing any intensity from the Patriots? Where did all that go? I really thought they were going to explode in this one. A home game against a team that has only one redeeming quality, that being its running game. And the Patriots have always been able to take away the thing you do best. They did force Henne to throw 34 times, but they couldn't force him into any making any mistakes. The Dolphins were able to run it well enough when it mattered. They just ended up trailing late in the game, so they didn't have the option to run. This was just a 7 point game late in the 4th quarter and one break for Miami could have led to overtime. I worry about these Patriots, I just don't know if they have... it.
NEW ORLEANS (-13.5) over Carolina
NO 30, CAR 20
What is up with the Saints early in football games? I really don't get it. They have no defense, they turn the ball over, Drew Brees looks like he thinks he's still in San Diego (I'm not bitter), and before you can blink, they are down 17-3 late in the first half. Against Carolina. The Panthers. And Jake Delhomme. Ugh. How does that happen? But then, in the second half, they are un-freaking-touchable. You can't stop the offense, the defense gives up N-O-T-H-I-N-G, NOTHING. After a 100+ yard first half, DeAngelo Williams had less than 50 in the second half. It's not like they went away from him, said, "Here Jake, throw it all over the place." No, he just couldn't do anything. The Saints can't keep playing like this and get away with it. They will lose if they don't show up for the half the game. Mark my words.
SAN FRANCISCO (-4) over Tennessee
Score: TEN 34, SF 27
Well, well, well. It appears we have witnessed somewhat of a role reversal here. A few weeks ago, the 49ers were a Brett Favre miracle TD away from being undefeated, whereas the Titans were losing by 59 points, and had a TOTAL of -7 yards passing in a game (I don't make this stuff up). Now, the Titans look like the team of 2008, and the 49ers are floundering, like a fish out of water. I'm telling you, weird football season.

It didn't look good. But as you can see, good old David Akers came through with 3 field goals (all over 40 yards, one over 50 yards) and I pulled out my 3rd consecutive victory.

NFL Week 9
We have just about reached the halfway point in the NFL season. Some teams have ascerted their dominance (Colts and Saints), while some teams have ascerted their incompetence (Rams, Buccs, Titans, Lions, etc. etc.). But then there is the middle group. The teams that are 3-4 or 4-3, or maybe even 5-2, the teams that we just can't be sure about. This group encompasses nearly 50% of the league. It's basically anyone who is in 2nd or 3rd in their division (with the exception of the Oakland Raiders, who have no place being a 3rd place team) and right now it looks like most of them are fighting for 4 total wild card spots. It's going to ugly very quickly.
Anyways, here are my week 9 picks, hope you enjoy:
(Home team in CAPS)
Kansas City (+6.5) over JACKSONVILLE
Ummm... yeah... so there!
Baltimore (-3) over CINCINNATI
I still don't trust the Bengals. I am much more inclined to believe that the Ravens will pull it together and start crushing people on defense again. All the pieces are still there. True, the pieces are aging quickly, but they are still in place. Also, I do believe that, at some point, the Bengals are going to implode and return to 2008 form. I still maintain that the Steelers and Ravens are the creme de la creme of that division.
INDIANAPOLIS (-9) over Houston
I am punishing Gary Kubiak for benching my star fantasy RB. So maybe Steve Slaton has been having some fumbling issues. You sit him for a series or 2, not the whole game! And now you announce that we are going to see a 3 back rotation with Slaton, Ryan Moats, and Chris Brown (not be confused with criminal/recording artist Chris Brown). How dare you, Kubiak. How dare you.
ATLANTA (-10) over Washington
I see no reason to pick the Redskins. None whatsoever. You can't even use the "coming off a bye week" argument because they have been taking byes since week 4. They should be completely fresh by now, exerting no effort for 4 weeks. On the other hand, the Falcons were a tipped pass that was intercepted in the red zone, and better clock management in the last 2 minutes from taking the Saints to overtime. They had heaps and heaps of momentum at the end of the game, and if they had played another quarter, I think they win by 14 points.
Green Bay (-9.5) over TAMPA BAY
I don't think the Buccs are the worst team in football. Obviously they are in the bottom 5, but I don't think I would pick them to lose in every conceivable match-up. Like if they had played the Lions last week, without Calvin Johnson, or if they played the Rams, I would take them in a heartbeat. Unfotunately, their schedule has been rather unkind to them and they really don't have many opportunities left. That being said... I don't think this is the week. The Packers need it too much.
Arizona (+3) over CHICAGO
This has got to be, by far, the most difficult game to pick EVER. These 2 teams have been all over the place. One week they are beating a playoff team, next week they are down big to Carolina or Cincinnati. I don't get it. So I'm taking the points with Arizona because it makes my odds of winning just a tiny bit higher. That's really it.
NEW ENGLAND (-10.5) over Miami
I will continue to choose the Patriots until then give me a reason not to. Not to mention, the Dolphins could not get their offense going at all. If Ted Ginn Jr. doesn't shred up the Jets special teams... TWICE, the Dolphins don't win that game.
NEW ORLEANS (-13.5) over Carolina
I'm loving that extra half point the Saints are getting right there. Can the Saints win by 14? Of course they can. Can they win by more than 14? Well I don't know. Fortunately, I don't need to address that conundrum. Thank you, oddsmakers.
SEATTLE (-10) over Detroit
We still aren't sure if Calvin Johnson is playing this week, so it's sort of difficult to decide on this one. I'm just gonna go ahead and pick the Seahawks because I fell like they should win the game either way. They have to beat teams like Detroit if they are going to have any kind of playoff run.
SAN FRANCISCO (-4) over Tennessee
Have people forgotten about the first 6 weeks of the Titans season? How can the 49ers only be giving 4 points at home against a 1-6 team who's starting QB might off himself right there on the field if he throws a pick. The line should be at least a touchdown. Easy game to pick.
San Diego (+5) over NEW YORK GIANTS
Pshh. I scoff at this line. Do you hear that line? You are being scoffed at. The Giants are coming apart at the seems worse than Andy Reid's sportscoat. Their secondary is letting guys run wide open down the field, and Philip Rivers WILL find them if that happens. Also, it turns out when Eli Manning was 11 years old, he tragically lost his arm in a windsurfing accident, and the only thing they had to replace it with was a wet noodle. How many INTs in this game Pasta Bravo? 3? 4?
Dallas (+3) over PHILADELPHIA
The Eagles lost to the Raiders. It happened. One doesn't forget.
Pittsburgh (-3) over DENVER
Come on Steelers! COME ON!!!!!!!!!!
Fantasy Time:
WeLikeSportz - Tom Brady, Cedric Benson, Steve Slaton/Ryan Moats, Vincent Jackson, Calvin Johnson, Michael Crabtree, Fred Davis, David Akers, Packers D
I haven't decided which Houston RB to start yet, ok? I don't know what to do. I HATE Gary Kubiak.
League of Imported Spirits - Peyton Manning, Michael Turner, Pierre Thomas, Andre Johnson, Hines Ward, Brent Celek, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Johnny Knox, Kris Brown, Ravens D

Week 8 Mistakes
5-8
I got a little cocky after last week and the football Gods decided I needed a good smacking. Right to the face. They pounded me just like Tom Cable pounds... powdered donuts (didn't see THAT coming, did ya?).
To be honest, it could have been much worse, I hit on a couple of underdogs (including my Ballsy Pick of the Week Miami Dolphins), but I easily could have gone 3-10.
Anyways, here are the 5 games I got right:
BALTIMORE (-3.5) over Denver 30-7
CHICAGO (-13.5) over Cleveland 30-6
Houston (-3.5) over BUFFALO 31-10
Miami (+3) over NEW YORK JETS 30-25 (Ballsy Pick of the Week SUCCESSFUL)
Atlanta (+10) over NEW ORLEANS 27-35
I really needed that Falcons cover last night. I was mentally preparing myself for 4-9 when the Saints got the ball back up by 11 with less than 2 minutes left, but they stripped the ball and jason elam got the job done with that saving field goal. There is a huge difference between 4-9 and 5-8.
GREEN BAY (-3) over Minnesota
Score: MIN 38, GB 26
Here is a direct quote from a Packers fan during the game, which I believe captures my feelings about it perfectly, "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
INDIANAPOLIS (-12.5) over San Francicso
Score: IND 18, SF 14
The only part of this game I watched was 4-5 plays late in the 4th quarter where the 49ers were trying to get the ball back. Of course they were unable to stop the Colts, because no one is ever able to. Anyways, my point is, I'm not really sure why the Colts offense was so lackluster. The 49ers defense is above average, definitely top 10 in the league. But to keep Manning out of the endzone? This marks only the 6th time since the beginning of the 2006 season (62 games, including playoffs) that Manning played in game in which he did not have a touchdown. And the Colts still won the game. Watch out for this team, they know how to get it done.
DETROIT (-4) over St. Louis
Score: STL 17, DET 1o
Congratulations to the Rams, if they didn't get this one, they might have gone 0-16. And no one wants that. The difference was the absence of Calvin Johnson, who is far and away the best player on the Lions roster. If he plays, I think this game at least goes to overtime. The Lions just had nothing working on offense.
Seattle (+9.5) over DALLAS
Score: DAL 38, SEA 17
I don't know what it was that ignited this Cowboys team, but they are on fire right now. Miles Austin has been a very nice story for them (despite the fact that he is a 6'3'' WR who can't dunk over the crossbar) and the defense has come alive the past few games. They have to be the favorite in that division now, what with the Giants in a complete free fall. And I still refuse to forget that the Eagles lost to the Raiders. Unforgiveable.
SAN DIEGO (-16.5) over Oakland
Score: SD 24, OAK 16
Yeah yeah, we didn't play great. We definitely played down to the Raiders level. But we won, and at this point, I will take an 8 point win over anyone.
Jacksonville (+3) over TENNESSEE
Score: TEN 30, JAC 13
It turns out the Titans should have given Vince Young this opportunity weeks ago. He was not spectacular, but he did not turn the ball over and he threw a TD pass. Not to mention, he got the Titans their first win of the season. Much credit must be given to Chris Johnson, who exploded for 228 yards and 2 TDs. I was correct in my "MJD has a big game" prediction (177 yards and 2 TDs) but he had no help and we can officially write off the Jags (they were 3-3 coming in...)
ARIZONA (-10) over Carolina
Score: CAR 34, ARZ 21
You may be expecting me to apologize to Jake Delhomme for saying that he is awful. No, he was 7/14 for 90 yards, ok? Calm down. The Panthers do not go through Delhomme anymore. They go through DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, who combined for 245 yards and 2 TDs. I don't know what happened to the Cardinals. They had been playing so well on both offense and defense. The Panthers marched up and down the field with the run game and Kurt Warner threw 5 interceptions. I was all but ready to give them the NFC West, now I'm not so sure. I guess someone has to win that division.
New York Giants (Pick) over PHILADELPHIA
Score: PHI 40, NYG 17
I guess this plantar fasciitis is more serious than we thought...

I was forced to sit 4 starters (2 on byes, 2 out with injuries), add in the Steve Slaton debocle, and this had the potential to be a very, VERY rough week. Thankfully, the Jackson brothers came up huge and Hasselbeck held his own (despite taking numerous shots to his ribs). No one is going to talk about Matt because his team lost by 21, by it really was a gutsy performance by him.
